Current State of Linux

Debian Based

  • Debian itself had a recent and very positive release called Bookworm.
    • MX Linux is still in beta for this release.
  • Ubuntu: replacing Debian packages with snaps is proving to be unpopular and costly for performance. This is especially inconvenient as all major web browsers are installed and maintained this way.

RPM Based

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux has caused a controversy with locking their source code behind a soft paywall.
  • openSUSE will be ending support for Leap towards the end of 2024 and the successor is yet unknown leading to uncertainty in release scheduling.
